Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods, will have to wait another year to achieve his dream of playing in the U.S. Open after failing to qualify for the second consecutive time.

The 16-year-old, who recently shared his thoughts on his father’s relationship with Vanessa Trump, is seen as a potential successor to his globally renowned father in pursuing a professional golf career. The young prodigy has already shown promise, setting a new record at the 2020 PNC Championship as the youngest participant at just 11 years old.

He had the privilege of teeing off alongside his father, a 15-time major winner, and continued to do so in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. He also participated in his first pre-qualifying tournament for a PGA Tour event at the Cognizant Classic.

However, his journey to participate in the next U.S. Open came to an end at a regional qualifying tournament at Wellington Golf Club, Florida.

Competing in his home state, Woods Jr. scored a three-over-par 75, falling short of the required 68 to secure his Final Qualifying spot. This marks the second year in a row that the aspiring golfer has been unable to clear this hurdle, meaning he will miss the tournament at Oakmont.

Before this, the teenager’s father spoke highly of how his son has been a pillar of support for him through recent physical and mental hurdles. Following his 2021 car accident that resulted in severe injuries and ongoing fitness struggles, PEOPLE magazine reported that the golf star has leaned on Charlie’s backing.

“Being a dad has helped him stay focused on his recovery,” they said. “At times, it’s been very difficult for him both physically and mentally.

“His leg injuries caused him extreme pain… He has worked very hard in physical therapy. He is a fighter and has been determined to get better, though.

“Tiger loves spending time with Charlie on the golf course, but he has a completely different vibe than Earl had while working with him.

“They’re all smiles. Tiger is definitely teaching him the right techniques, but there’s not the intensity that Earl had with him,” the insider noted. “It’s a total bonding experience. Tiger can be goofy and funny with Charlie. It’s not ‘all work and no play’ like Earl could sometimes be.”

A loving father, Tiger shared with ESPN his joy in playing golf with his son. He expressed: “Any time I get a chance to spend time with my son, it’s always special. And to do it in a competitive forum, the last couple of years have been magical, and to be able to do it again, we’re looking forward to it.”

The 15-time major champ has had to take a step back from golf this year after an operation on his Achilles, putting his ambitions for the 2025 Masters on hold. He filled in his fans about his health, remarking: “As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured.

“This morning, Dr Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon.

“I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab, thank you for all the support.”

Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods fell short in his quest for the 2025 US Open after shooting a three-over-par 75 at Florida’s Wellington Golf Club.

The 16-year-old was teeing it up in one of the many regional qualifying events where a limited number of players make it through to one of the 13 Final Qualifying sites ahead of next month’s championship at Oakmont.

Woods Jr was seven shy of the 68 score needed to advance through to final stage, with Arth Sinha (66), Matthew Marigliano (67), Tyler Stachkunas (68) and Carson Kiawonn (68) progressing.

His 75 is an improvement on last year’s effort, where he carded a nine-over 81 at he Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

The golfing prodigy, who has starred in five PNC Championships alongside his father, Tiger, had a successful 2024 campaign where he qualified for his first US Junior Amateur Championship. He was unable to progress to the match play knockout stages at Southern Hills, however, after shooting 22-over-par for 36 holes.

The maximum age for competing at the US Junior is 18 so Charlie has another three further years of eligibility for the event.

Woods was back on the big stage earlier this year in the prestigious Sage Valley Junior Invitational, where he finished T25th at 11-over-par after rounds of 78, 73, 73 and 75.

He ended the 72-hole event 20 strokes behind winner Miles Russell, the no.1-ranked played in the AJGA rankings.

His next PNC Championship appearance alongside Dad, Tiger, could be in doubt after the 15-time Major winner underwent surgery for a ruptured achilles tendon in March.

The PNC takes place in December, nine months after his surgery, and the use of carts is allowed so it seems like there is a good chance the pair could tee it up again, albeit there is no guarantee.

They lost out to Team Langer in a playoff last year for their second runner-up finish in the family event, which is open to Major and The Players Championship winners and their family members.

As Sam Woods wraps up a stellar high school athletic career and prepares to join Stanford University, her younger brother, Charlie Woods, continues to stay out of the public eye.

While Sam has been making headlines on the soccer field and the track, Charlie’s absence from competitive golf has left many fans wondering about his future.

Charlie Woods’ absence raises questions

Charlie, 16, last competed at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship in February 2025 and hasn’t participated in any public tournaments since.

His silence has sparked concern and curiosity, especially following his impressive performances last year, including a hole-in-one at the 2024 PNC Championship.

Although rumors regarding his health have circulated, the Woods family has not issued a formal statement.

However, Charlie is listed as a participant for the Team TaylorMade Invitational set for late May-offering a glimmer of return for the young golfer.

Meanwhile, Sam has emerged as a dominant force in Florida high school sports.

A senior at The Benjamin School, she played a pivotal role in helping the varsity girls’ soccer team win their first-ever Florida 2A FHSAA state title in March.

Her defensive prowess was key to the squad’s 1-0 victory over the Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

She also contributed significantly to her school’s track and field program, helping both the boys’ and girls’ teams claim regional championship titles.

Her recent achievements have shined a spotlight on the contrasting paths taken by the Woods siblings.

Sam’s success comes at a time of emotional turbulence for the family, following the death of Tiger Woods’ mother, Kultida Woods.

Tiger withdrew from the Genesis Invitational citing mental anguish, but found solace in watching Sam lead her team to victory.

A heartfelt embrace between father and daughter after the final whistle captured a moment of unity and healing.

Speaking on Charlie’s situation, fellow golfer John Daly II offered some perspective.

“I feel like everybody just put Charlie in this category that not many people get to until they are 20, 21, or 22, whatever it is,” he said.

“He’s just a kid, he wants to have fun, I guess. I don’t know him all that well but I think people expect way too much of him for his age right now.”

As Sam sets her sights on collegiate athletics, her dedication and resilience offer a hopeful narrative amid the uncertainty surrounding her brother’s next move.
