Claressa Shields might have some trouble involving her family. The American boxer is still in a state of shock and is processing the news she received. While she has clarified no situation or specified the incident, she seems to be in a worrying state.

Shields, 29, turned to her X handle and asked for prayers from the fans, as she disclosed that she was lucky to have sanity prevail over her senses. In addition, she banked her faith in God and even asked her fans to rally behind her and pray for her family. But the fans might have to wait for a while before the two-division undisputed champion discloses the incident to them.

Shields, at 15-0, wrote, “I thank God for my sanity…. Just received some scary news…. Just pray for my family…. God going to work it out. I know he will 🙏🏾”

Notably, Shields is promoting her upcoming biopic, ‘The Fire Inside,’ which tells her story of picking up boxing gloves, becoming an Olympic champion at 17, and then dominating the professional boxing landscape. The project, due to release in December, also sheds light on her personal life, giving a peep into her tumultuous family, as she hoped to become a boxer in her early days.

With a recent win over Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse, ‘GWOAT’ has also clinhed the heavyweight title, and looks set to solidify her place in both the heavyweight and middleweight divisions. However, she has her eyes set on defeating the best that boxing has to offer.

Before she took on Lepage-Joanisse, Shields issued an open challenge to the likes of Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor. The Flint native declared, “Any of those girls who want to be the GWOAT, all you got to do is make the fight with me. Alycia Baumgardner, Amanda Serrano, Katie Taylor – all you got to do is make the fight with me. Then I can show you, you’re not the GWOAT.”

However, there are weight constraints in making these fights, and therefore, these fights seem a distant reality to boxing fans. But that doesn’t put an end to Shields’ ambitions, as she also had her PLF exploits to show up for.

Canelo Álvarez spent his Saturday doing what he usually does around this time of year amid Mexican Independence Day weekends: taking care of business. In this case, it was a win over undefeated challenger Edgar Berlanga.

The unified super middleweight champion outclassed the undefeated challenger in a unanimous decision (117-110, 118-109, 118-109), his fifth straight title defense to go the distance.

Unlike other bouts where he needed time to build momentum, the heavily favored Álvarez had an advantage from the first bell. He calmly took the first first two rounds before flattening Berlanga with a left hook in the third. More punishment came from there, but Berlanga managed to survive.

Álvarez got better as the fight went on, but Berlanga’s trash talk remained high throughout. Berlanga had further missteps, including a warning for an intentional headbutt and a fall after swinging and missing on a power punch. He spent much of the pre-fight proceedings trying to annoy Álvarez and that continued during the bout, with Álvarez sometimes jawing back.

But in the end, Berlanga landed more words than punches. The pair at least shared a nice embrace after the final bell, with both likely knowing exactly the decision that was coming.

Floyd Mayweather Jr VS Canelo Alvarez

It was still a decent showing for Berlanga despite the loss. He built his reputation on a string of first-round knockouts, but was a massive underdog going into Saturday. Álvarez still looked a class above him, but the 27-year-old looked like he belonged by the end, and that can be a win in itself as he looks for his next opponent.

As for Álvarez, he hasn’t won via finish since stopping Caleb Plant, who won earlier Saturday, in November 2021. It might not be a great sign for how the 34-year-old is aging.

The bigger question now, though, is where Álvarez goes from here. Rising star David Benavidez might be the simplest answer, but Álvarez might still want a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, the only fighter to defeat him since Floyd Mayweather in 2013. And who knows? Maybe a super-fight against super welterweight king Terence Crawford could be out there.

Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga is scheduled to take place later tonight on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The undercard is scheduled to start at around 1am BST on Sunday morning, with the main event ring walks expected at around 4am.

According to ESPN, Alvarez is considering a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, whom he previously lost to in a light heavyweight bout.

If successful, it would give Canelo a chance to avenge his loss and capture additional titles in the light heavyweight division.

These plans, however, may once again delay a much-anticipated fight against David Benavidez.

Benavidez has been waiting for three years to face Alvarez, but Canelo’s focus on a rematch with Bivol could leave Benavidez out of the equation once more.

Usyk, 37, and Fury, 36, clashed in May earlier this year to become the first undisputed heavyweight this century. After a close encounter, the Ukrainian fighter stood tall and took all the marbles to his home, setting up a rematch for December. But there have been doubts in the Usyk camp about Fury, at 34-1-1, honoring his rematch commitments and the contractual clause.

The camp has referenced on multiple occasions how the British fighter rescheduled their fight three times. They also considered how he failed to give Wladimir Klitschko his rematch on two different occasions, pulling out because of medical reasons.

Usyk, at 22-0, admitted his apprehensions when he sat down in a conversation with ‘Ready To Fight’. However, according to him, things would be different because of their contractual obligations, which impose financial sanctions in case of a withdrawal. The Simferopol native said, “No way, because the ball’s in our court now. He has a contract, and so do I until Dec 31st. We have to hold this fight up to and including [that date]. If he pulls out Dec 21st, he will lose all of his money and dividends and won’t be a man of his word anymore.”

Interestingly, a match with the winner of Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois is in the pipeline for the winner of Usyk vs. Fury for the next year. But Usyk only has the motivation to fight only two boxers now.

Retirement plans? Oleksandr Usyk hints at future after Tyson Fury rematch

‘The Cat’ revealed his plans with Seconds Out and admitted his interest in a trilogy fight with ‘AJ’. After that, he wanted to hang his gloves and give the younger generation a chance to take over. He declared, “Well, this is a rematch with Fury and possibly a third match with Joshua… Apart from Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, I have no desire to box with anyone.”

A trilogy match with Joshua, 34, would only make sense if the British fighter triumphs over Dubois, clinches the IBF title, and then tries to unify the heavyweight titles. Otherwise, taking a fight with Dubois also won’t affect Usyk’s image, as there is unfinished business between the two.

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – On Thursday night, Flint boxer Ardreal Holmes Jr. (15-0-0, 6 KOs) will take center stage as the main event in his hometown.

“Huge blessing,” Holmes Jr. said. “Just total excitement. Just ready to deliver and execute.”

Holmes Jr. will put his undefeated record on the line against Cuban boxer Hugo Noriega (10-2-0, 5 KOs) in the main event of the BIG TIME BOXING USA fight card at the Dort Center on Thursday, November 12.

 

The card features Holmes and a host of Flint boxers who grew up training at Berston Field House, including Holmes’ younger brother Jaquan McElroy, Leon Lawson III and Chris Thompson.

15-time world champion Claressa Shields was on hand at the open media workout at Berston, helping Holmes Jr. prepare for his fight. The two have known each other since they were kids. Shields says she has tremendous respect for Holmes Jr.

“I respect his skills,” Shields said. “I see that he’s working on his uppercuts, his hooks. He’s looking like he’s better from the last time that I seen him and if he got better from the last time I seen him when he got a second-round knockout, I know that this fight is going to be very exciting.”

Former world champion Wladimir Klitschko was dethroned by Fury back in 2015 and has now had his say on the rematch which will be for the WBA, WBC and WBO titles in December out in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to rtfight.com, he said he thinks it will be a different fight to the last one, which was nip and tuck over 12 rounds.

“We can’t look into the future — only my brother can do that. But I’m confident that the next fight between Fury and Usyk will either be short because Oleksandr will knock Tyson out, or it will be extremely challenging for both athletes — even tougher than the first bout.”

Klitschko then reflected on the first fight.

“We saw that up until the ninth round, the fight was very tough. But I’m proud of Oleksandr. Finally, he had high praise for his countryman Usyk.

“Usyk will go down in history as one of the most unique athletes in boxing.”

Whoever wins this fight could well go into another undisputed fight with the winner of Anthony Joshua versus Daniel Dubois.

The pair will now do battle once more out in Saudi Arabia in December and ahead of that former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis gives Fury ever chance of bouncing back when the two meet again.

‘Fury will learn from this [loss] and he’ll be back! Losing is also part of the game, it’s how you respond to a loss that makes all the difference.’

Fury has himself claimed that he was having too much fun in the first fight and will be better the second time around.

If ‘The Gypsy King’ can come through against the Ukrainian and rival Anthony Joshua can beat Daniel Dubois for the IBF title when the two fight at Wembley later this month, the long-awaited grudge match between the pair for all of the belts could take place next year.

‘The Cat’ claimed a split-decision win with scorecards of 115-112 and 114-113 in his favour while the third judge gave it to Fury 114-113.

A second fight between the two had been targeted for autumn 2024 but has since been pushed back to allow Fury and Usyk to recover from their respective facial injuries.

The rematch will not be for the undisputed titles, with Usyk being forced to vacate his IBF belt.

Fury vs Usyk 2: Date and start time

This 12-round heavyweight title clash is set to take place on Saturday, December 21.

The rematch will again be held at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Start times and additional details are expected to be announced in due course.

If it follows the timings of the first fight, the undercard will get underway at 7pm UK time, with main event ringwalks around 11:30pm.

The event is expected to be broadcast live on TNT Sports Box Office – the new name for BT Sport – but pricing is yet to be revealed.

Usyk’s manager Alex Krassyuk has suggested his client could meet Fury in a trilogy if he is beaten in December.

He told talkSPORT on White & Jordan: “Why not? Boxing has had this in the past.

“If the people want to see this for a third time or a fourth time, it may well happen.

“Boxing is all about the desire of the fans, and Turki Alalshikh is the man that is currently making their dreams come true.”

Meanwhile, Fury insists he beat Usyk in May and says the Ukrainian was like a ‘local amateur boxer’.

“I’ve watched the fight back lots and still got the same answer – I thought I won,” Fury said.

“Usyk knows he didn’t beat me. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it’d be.

“My problem was I probably had too much fun. It was too easy. It was like I was in there with a local amateur boxer.

“I was enjoying it too much, messing around and paid the ultimate price in round nine.

“I’ve got to get him out of there because I’m not gonna get a decision.

“It’s unfortunate because it’s hard enough to win a fight just by winning it, never mind knowing you’ve got to knock someone out.

“I’m confident and looking forward to the challenge. I hear he’s got a broken jaw and a broken eye socket, so get yourself well and I’ll see you in December.”
