Jake Paul lays out wild rules and weight for bizarre Gervonta Davis fight

Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis came desperately close to fighting each other earlier this year.

The pair were locked into negotiations in March over a bout, with terms close to being agreed.

All Davis needed to do was beat Lamont Roach in what many believed to be a routine defence of his WBA lightweight title.

However, Roach proved to be a much sterner test than Davis had bargained for.

Not only did he hold Davis to a draw, but there was considerable debate as to whether he should have won the fight after he was wrongfully denied a knockdown in the ninth round.

As a result, Davis and Roach are set to rematch on August 16, while Paul will face former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on June 28 in Anaheim.

Providing both men win their respective contests, Paul is still open to making the fight with Davis.

“That was on the one yard as well, but he has to rematch Lamont Roach,” Paul told the Ariel Helwani show.

“He wants to get that back. Then we will be back in discussions with Mr. Gervonta.

“But this is the nature of boxing, you have massive fights on the one-yard line and then they fall through.”

Given the massive size disparity between the pair, the fight can only be sanctioned as an exhibition bout.

Paul, a natural cruiserweight (200lbs), claims he would cut down to 195lbs for the clash, while Davis, who hasn’t boxed beyond super lightweight (140lbs), would get as close as possible to the weight.

He also confirmed the fight would be contested over 10 three-minute rounds with no restrictions on the rules, meaning they would resemble those of a professional contest.

This comes after Paul previously suggested that the fight could be made in November, provided everything goes to plan in negotiations, which are rumbling on behind the scenes.

“We’re working on it behind the scenes to make that happen,” said Paul.

“Obviously, that’s a fight where the fans are going to win, and it’s going to be the biggest event of the year.

“I’ll give anybody the smoke. I am just getting warmed up in the sport.

“I want big money fights and tough opponents. I want to become a world champion. You’re going to see me be very active.”
