It was suggested by Colin Montgomerie that Tiger Woods should call time on his playing career ahead of The Open, and one fan at Royal Troon made their feelings known on the matter

“Prove Monty wrong!” was the cry on the first tee at Royal Troon as Tiger Woods got his first round of The Open Championship underway on Thursday.

Woods is making just his fifth start of the year this week, as the 82-time PGA Tour champion continues to play a part-time schedule amid struggles over his fitness. His injury setbacks have unsurprisingly hampered his game in recent years, and heading into this week’s event his future was questioned.

Woods’ former rival in Colin Montgomerie suggested it could well be time for the 15-time major winner to call time on his playing days, telling The Times: “I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was, the passion and the charismatic aura around him.

“There is none of that now. At Pinehurst, he did not seem to enjoy a single shot and you think ‘What the hell is he doing?’.” Questions Woods’ previous claims that he would only retire when he was no longer competitive, Montgomerie added: “Aren’t we there? I’d have thought we were past there.

Tiger Woods

“There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.” Having got his opening round underway in Ayrshire though, it appears the galleries are still keen to see the golfing great compete at the highest level.
This was clear to see in Woods’ first round following, with the 48-year-old drawing in a hefty crowd when kicking off his week at Royal Troon. Woods himself addressed Montgomerie’s claims during his pre-championship press conference on Tuesday, offering a brutal response.

Highlighting the fact that he was exempt to play this week as a past champion – an honour Montgomerie does not have – Woods said: “Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin is not. He is not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision.

“I do. So when I get to his age, I get to still make that decision, where he doesn’t.” Woods also received the banking of his PGA Tour pal Rickie Fowler on Tuesday, who believes the three-time Open champion still has lots to offer. “He still has plenty of good golf in him,” he told Mirror Sport.

“The game is better when we have him around… “I love being able to have Tiger [here]. He has been trying to continue to make sure he is ready to go, playing the majors and then hopefully a few other events on top of that… I would love to see him continue to stay healthy so he can play a select group of events throughout the year.”

Simone Biles is surely ‘Rising’. The champion athlete had her docuseries, ‘Simone Biles: Rising’ released recently on Netflix. And in just one day, the ratings have skyrocketed. According to the list by fixpatrol, within 24 hours of release, the docuseries is trending as the number 1 show in the Netflix Top 10 TV shows category. Such a development speaks volumes about Biles’ hype around the US. The documentary has dethroned popular TV shows like Homicide and Vikings: Valhalla. Both the shows reigned at the top for 17 and 47 days, respectively.

The docuseries predominantly focuses on Simone Biles’ traumatic experience at the Tokyo Olympics. This can be attributed as one of the biggest factors for the impressive success of the series. Almost the entire US sports fanatics wanted to have a detailed peek into what went through the champion’s mind. And providing the exact information just at the time of the Paris Olympics worked like magic for Katie Walsh & co.

While Biles did speak about her complications on several occasions, the documentary shows an unfiltered and much more closeup perspective as to what actually went through Biles’ mind. The US Gymnastics queen stated that it was well before the Olympics that she could sense something was wrong. And when she could not land her initial trial vault, the alarm bells in her mind went off. After she could not land a two-and-a-half, the shocked expression of Suni Lee mirrored the emotion every gymnastics fan went through. But being the champion she is, Simone Biles knew just what she needed to do.

Simone Biles not a ‘quitter’: Proved

Simone Biles was given the unwanted title of being the ‘Quitter of the Year’. Following the tragedy in Tokyo, Biles mentioned that she felt like quitting for ‘500,000’ times. Her coach, Laurent Landi, too, seemed doubtful as he stated that the ‘twisties’ were something that was not connected to gymnastics. But Biles slowly realized that she did not want to lament over the fact at 40 that she never tried when she had the time. Thus, Simone Biles was back in the gym.

In the documentary, Biles explained how she was scared to leap in the air. She also felt uncomfortable inside the gym, as Biles knew that she was the center of attraction after her Tokyo debacle. However, her fellow gymnasts helped her a lot during that phase. Constantly motivating Biles, they played a huge role in instilling self-belief into the Olympic gold medalist. Biles slowly started to come to her groove and cut to December 2023, when she was at the Worlds. With the whole world watching, Simone Biles did what nobody expected her to do. Biles landed the Biles II- a Yurchenko double pike, to pinpoint precision. Claiming the gold medal, Simone Biles announced her return in style. And while she steps into Paris as the favorite, Simone Biles has surely compelled the world to write her down in history. Forever.

The WNBA All-Stars are showing out Thursday on the Orange Carpet in Phoenix. Even amid the excitement, Fever phenom Caitlin Clark found the time to pay her fellow rookie and rival Angel Reese a huge compliment.

The pair are neck-and-neck in the race for Rookie of the Year, and both are coming off massive achievements in the first half of the WNBA season. Clark set the league’s single game assist record with 19 against the Wings on Wednesday, while Reese recently broke Candace Parker’s record for longest double-double streak in WNBA history at 15 games.

Clark and Reese will play on the same team for the first time Saturday as All-Stars, a pairing sure to excite every women’s basketball fan. Here’s what Clark had to say about her Sky counterpart on the Orange Carpet.

What did Caitlin Clark say about Angel Reese on the Orange Carpet?

Clark was asked for her thoughts on playing with Reese in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game on the Orange Carpet. The 22-year-old Fever guard was very open in her response.

“It’s obviously rare to have two rookies in the All-Star Game. The fans are super excited about it and I think it’s really good for the W,” Clark said. “Obviously she’s having an incredible year. She’s probably going to lead the game in rebounds, I expect that out of her. That’s just what she does. It should be fun.”

Angel Reese

Clark leads the WNBA in assists at the All-Star break with 8.2 per game, while Reese sits second in rebounds with 11.9 per game, second only to Aces star and MVP front-runner A’ja Wilson (12.0).

The duo share had a friendly rivalry going back to their days facing off in the NCAA, notably in the 2023 national championship and the 2024 Elite Eight. Reese won the title with LSU in 2023, but Clark and Iowa won the rematch in 2024 before falling to South Carolina in the tournament final.

All that being said, the emphasis in the rivalry is on friendly, and Clark and Reese will likely make a great duo on the court Saturday. Clark and Reese will play for Team WNBA, which will face off against Team USA as in a pre-Olympic tune-up.

Caitlin Clark All-Star Game outfit

The Orange Carpet is as much for the All-Stars to show off their style as it is for them to do press and pose for photos.

Clark showed out, wearing an Armani dress, Versace shoes and a Versace bag, along with Tiffany and Cartier jewelry. Like the rookie’s demeanor, her outfit is nothing too flashy, but it is classy nonetheless.

The WNBA’s All-Star weekend kicked off Thursday with an Orange Carpet event featuring the league’s top players, with one very noticeable absence — Angel Reese.

The Chicago Sky rookie opted to stay in Las Vegas following her team’s win over the Aces and took in an NBA Summer League game. While Reese is still set to travel to Arizona for Saturday’s All-Star Game, her Orange Carpet absence led some fans to worry that she could be skipping out on the game.

“Does anyone know if there is any truth to Angel Reese saying she wasn’t gonna even go to the all-star game?” a fan asked on X. “Sounds crazy but she didn’t show up on the carpet and is still in Vegas. It’s her rookie year and she’s an all-star why not enjoy every moment crazy crazy.”

Others saw it as a missed opportunity for Reese, who turned heads at the Orange Carpet back at the WNBA Draft.

Angel Reese

“It’s so odd that #AngelReese would skip out on the #OrangeCarpet to be in #lasvegas lol,” wrote a fan. “It’s so many players who dream of being an #WNBAAllStar and walking the carpet. She had the opportunity and passed up on it lol. Interesting move, but maybe it’s more to the decision.”

And some fans skipped the conspiracy theories altogether and lamented that they didn’t get to see Reese at the Orange Carpet event.

“no angel reese wnba red carpet look ?!?!? my night is ruined,” one fan wrote on X.

Some also defended Reese, pointing out that she’ll still be in Arizona to play in this weekend’s game.

“Y’all chill on Angel not showing up to the carpet tonight,” one person wrote on X. “She’ll be where she needs to be, right on time. A flight from Vegas to AZ is less than an hour, no biggie!”

Zhilei Zhang has claimed Anthony Joshua will never give him a rematch in the professional ranks.

Zhang and Joshua met for the first time at the London Olympics in 2012, where the Briton won by decision after dropping the Chinese star to the canvas with a crunching shot.

The pair have not yet met as professionals, with AJ currently focusing on his mission to become a three-time heavyweight world champion.

And ‘Big Bang’ believes it will never happen due to Joshua’s recent selection of opponents.

Zhang told the MMA Hour: “Mark my words, he’s not fighting me. He’s not going to fight me, ever.

“Because after the 2012 Olympic Games, that was when we initially collided.

“After that, it’s been so many years. I was with Matchroom [Boxing] and I know what happened. I don’t think he’s ever going to fight me.

“My managers flew to London and I got words. So I don’t think he’s going to fight me.

“Look at his previous opponents – Francis Ngannou from the UFC, Robert Helenius, I don’t think he has what it takes to stand up to me.

“The way he picks his opponents says a lot about him. Neither does Eddie [Hearn] want it. He’s [AJ] a cash cow for Eddie.

Anthony Joshua

“My managers got an invitation, flew to London to talk to them, and got a no.

“I don’t know why. I don’t have a reason. That’s his problem. But if he ever wants to fight, I’m in.”

A showdown has always been teased between the pair with Joshua having explored the option of facing Zhang on multiple occasions.

This includes for his upcoming fight, after the Chinese star dispatched of Deontay Wilder in June.

But Joshua has now received a title shot for the IBF belt against Daniel Dubois on September 21.

Zhang has yet to pencil in his next outing, but is coming to the end of his career at the age of 41.

He will be hoping for a final hoorah for a title, when the option comes up with Usyk and Daniel Dubois currently holding the belts.

Heavyweight contender Zhilei Zhang believes old amateur rival Anthony Joshua has long been ducking him and won’t fight him in the future.

Back when both men were being promoted by Eddie Hearn, and Joshua held versions of the heavyweight title, a defence against Zhang in China was frequently mentioned. But the reunion of 2012 Olympic rivals never materialized.

Zhang’s stock has risen since those days. He twice defeated Joe Joyce and, when representing Queensberry at the June ‘5 v 5’ event, he knocked out Deontay Wilder who was moonlighting for Matchroom. Zhang, however, has inferred that Joshua never fancied the fight and won’t do so in the future.

“Mark my words, he’s not fighting me. He’s not going to fight me, ever,” said Zhang when speaking on The MMA Hour. “Because after the 2012 Olympic Games, that was when we initially collided. After that, it’s been so many years. I was with Matchroom, and I know what happened. I don’t think he’s ever going to fight me.”

Joshua recently faced former UFC world champion Francis Ngannou in a professional boxing match. The fight was a mismatch, with Joshua securing a devastating finish in the second round. Zhang believes Joshua’s choice of opponents in recent fights shows that he would rather take on easier opposition than face the 280-pound southpaw.

“My managers flew to London, and I got words. So, I don’t think he’s going to fight me. Look at his previous opponents – Francis Ngannou from the UFC, Robert Helenius, I don’t think he has what it takes to stand up to me. The way he picks his opponents says a lot about him.”

Anthony Joshua‘s team is furious with Daniel Dubois, alleging that Dubois has failed to sign up for additional drug testing ahead of their upcoming fight.

The former sparring partners are set to clash for the IBF heavyweight title in September at Wembley Stadium. However, Joshua’s camp has claimed that Dubois has not yet enrolled for testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

On Tuesday, Joshua’s team tweeted: “Evening @Queensberry… any update on why @DynamiteDubois isn’t signed up for @Vada_Testing yet??”

In response, Queensberry Promotions replied: “Daniel is enrolled as VADA will confirm.”

This controversy follows a heated exchange between Joshua and Dubois during a joint interview ahead of their September 21 title fight. Tensions flared when Dubois asserted that he was ready to “go now” if Joshua “wants to swing.”

Joshua retorted, “Shut up, relax. I’ll throw this f***ing chair across your face. Don’t disrespect me.”
Dubois tried to stay composed, responding, “You can’t intimidate me, who do you think you are?”

This exchange escalated to the point where Joshua got out of his seat, and the two fighters had to be separated by security as promoters Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn watched.

Joshua continued, “Daniel, don’t disrespect me or I’ll put this chair through your face. Warn this little boy not to disrespect me. I don’t take disrespect lightly, you know. Don’t sit on the table telling me we can go now, telling me this and that.”

Promoter Frank Warren commented, “This was serious. We don’t need any stunts to sell this fight.”

Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang has spoken out against former two-time world champion Brit Anthony Joshua, expressing his interest in fighting him.

Zhilei said in an interview with MMA Hour:

Joshua last stepped into the ring against Francis Ngannou in March of this year. That fight, which was stopped in the second round, ended in favor of Anthony by knockout. He has 28 wins (25 by knockout) and three losses on his record.

On the night of June 2 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) Zhang won by knockout in the fifth round over American Deontay Wilder. He has 27 wins (22 by knockout), two losses and one draw on his record.

Tiger Woods has dismissed suggestions that he should retire from professional golf as he prepares to mount a challenge for the British Open, which begins at Royal Troon on Thursday.

The American golfer won the last of his 15 majors at the 2019 Masters, with his most recent professional victory coming later that year at the Zozo Championship. Since then, he has faced significant challenges, particularly after a car accident in 2021 that nearly resulted in the loss of his right leg.

After missing the cut at last month’s US Open, former world number two Colin Montgomerie, who famously never won a major, suggested it might be time for the 82-time PGA Tour event winner to retire.

“There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger Woods it’s time to go,” Montgomerie said. “Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.”

When asked about those comments ahead of the Open at Royal Troon, Tiger Woods responded: “Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt, so he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do. I’ll play as long as I can play, and I feel like I can still win the event.”

Asked if his belief in his ability to win had wavered during his struggles over the last two years, Woods replied: “No.”

Tiger Woods

His press conference comments prompted a swift response from Montgomerie. “If golf writers want my thoughts on Tiger, please ask me directly, rather than taking a quote from an interview out of context. Wishing Tiger Woods an enjoyable and successful week,” Montgomerie posted on X.

The former top golfer’s hopes of turning back the clock have not been helped by tournaments favouring the biggest hitters in the game as driving distances get longer. However, he believes that Royal Troon may play to his strengths. On this links course, accuracy has an edge over distance, boosting Woods’ chances of at least cutting.

“The older you get, the less you can carry the golf ball, but over here, you can run the golf ball 100 yards if you get the right wind and the right trajectory,” said Woods, who won the Open in 2000, 2005, and 2006.

“I think that’s one of the reasons why you see older champions up there on the board because they’re not forced to have to carry the ball 320 yards anymore. I’ve been training a lot better. We’ve been busting it pretty hard in the gym, which has been good.”

Five years after his last major championship win, Tiger Woods announced he is “busting it” in the gym and ready to challenge for the Claret Jug at the British Open at Royal Troon on Thursday.

The 48-year-old dismissed retirement suggestions, having last won a major at the 2019 Masters and his most recent professional victory at the 2019 Zozo Championship.

Woods has faced significant struggles since a 2021 car accident that nearly cost him his right leg. After missing the cut at last month’s US Open, former world number two Colin Montgomerie suggested it might be time for Woods to retire. “There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go,” Montgomerie said. “Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.”

In response, Woods stated, “Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt, so he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do. I’ll play as long as I can play and I feel like I can still win the event.” When asked if his belief had wavered during recent struggles, Woods replied, “No.”

Montgomerie responded on X, stating, “If golf writers want my thoughts on Tiger, please ask me directly rather than taking a quote out of context. Wishing Tiger an enjoyable and successful week.”

Despite Woods’ confident statements, he is clearly no longer the dominant player he was for two decades. His chances of returning to form are not helped by the trend of tournaments favouring long drivers, but he believes Royal Troon could work to his advantage.

At Royal Troon, accuracy is more important than distance, which could boost Woods’ chances to make the cut. “The older you get, the less you can carry the ball, but on this course, you can let it roll,” said Woods, a three-time Open winner (2000, 2005, 2006).

He added, “That’s why older champions can still compete here. I’ve been working hard in the gym, and it’s helping my game.”

Woods also expressed confidence in Keegan Bradley as Ryder Cup captain for 2025. “I think Keegan will be a great leader; he’s very passionate about the event,” Woods said. He turned down the captaincy due to time constraints but said he might reconsider in the future: “When I have more time and can fully commit, I’ll put my hat in the ring again.”
