Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are set to clash on September 12 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The fight was made official after the Mexican’s win against William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It’s a blockbuster showdown between two of the best pound-for-pound superstars in the world.

Alvarez is 62-2-2 and his only two career losses have come against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. Alvarez fought Mayweather when he was only 23, suffering a unanimous decision loss.

Crawford’s coach Brian Bomack has now looked back on the contest. When asked how Alvarez has changed since being beaten by ‘Money’ Mayweather, Bomack responds by saying it’s all about experience, adding that Alvarez’s team shouldn’t have put him up against someone like Mayweather at such a tender age.

Speaking to MillCity Boxing, he said:

Experience man, that’s experience. And I was surprised that [Oscar] De La Hoya put him on that chopping plot and let him fight Mayweather. I was like, “Why would they do that? Why would they let their main guy up there and do that and make that fight happen?” I didn’t understand that. But, look at him now. Look at the figures from them and look at the figures from now.

When asked whether Canelo Alvarez was too green when he fought Floyd Mayweather, he said:

Hell yeah. Somebody like Mayweather with that IQ, I would have never done that to my young cat. You’ve got to let fighters grow man, let fighters grow. I haven’t seen one mother****** come out here and beat a world beater.

Bomac believes every top fighter needs to be beat in order to grow and become better.

Just a week after the thrilling fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, the victory of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez over William Scull was met with a swathe of disappointed fans after a dismal bout left many furious over the lack of action.

However, while Canelo’s win may have been the most boring of his career, it has set the stage for a mega-fight later this year when the Mexican superstar takes on fellow pound-for-pound contender, Terence Crawford.

Canelo spent the majority of his Saturday night fight chasing Scull around the ring, whose evading tactics frustrated both the Mexican and the paying public. With the bout setting a CompuBox record low of 445 total punches, and both fighters receiving a warning for inactivity, Canelo expressed his annoyance in his post-fight interview, saying “I don’t like to fight those kinds of guys”. “They came to just survive to the final round. That’s why I don’t like to fight them. It won’t be that kind of fight (against Crawford),” Alvarez continued.

In a bout in which the only people at risk of being put to sleep were the viewers, the post-fight events generated more excitement than the 12-rounds that preceded it. After unifying his IBF belt with his WBA, WBC and WBO Super Middleweight titles via unanimous decision, the Mexican went face-to-face with Nebraska’s Crawford, as Turki Alalshikh announced that the two would fight at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on the 12th of September.

How Another Sport Forced Canelo vs Crawford to a Friday Night

The mega-fight will take place on the 12th of September

All that will change when Canelo and Crawford step into the ring in September. However, the bout won’t take place in boxing’s traditional Saturday night timeslot – or on a Saturday – at all. The reasons why it will happen on a Friday night have now emerged.

Per both the Las Vegas Review Journal and Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger, the unusual choice to stage the fight on a Friday doesn’t have anything to do with the venue not being available on the Saturday night.

Coppinger first explained the rationale for the scheduling in a social media post, remarking:

“That’s a Friday to avoid Saturday during college football season.”

The renowned journalist later clarified that the date had been chosen to avoid a conflict with televised college football games. These routinely draw millions of viewers and would almost certainly take away from viewership of the fight, which is expected – although not confirmed – to be a pay-per-view event in some form.

News of the Friday date will also be welcomed by UFC CEO Dana White. The veteran matchmaker is a co-promoter of Canelo vs Crawford, but must also oversee the UFC 320 pay-per-view event taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico on the Saturday night. Dana won’t have long to get between the two venues, but will at least be able to take both events live should he choose to do so.

Canelo Alvarez and William Scull barely let their hands go during a dull encounter on Saturday night.

The Mexican superstar became a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion by overcoming Scull via unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Both fighters did more posturing than punching throughout as they set a new record for the fewest punches thrown in a 12-round fight tracked by CompuBox in the punch counter’s 40-year history.

JUST IN: Anthony Joshua to undergo surgery on troublesome injury as comeback fight delayed

In total, just 445 punches were thrown over the distance: Canelo with 152 punches and Scull with 293 punches.

The previous record was 459 blows from Joseph Parker and Deontay Wilder’s sleep-inducing clash in December 2023.

On Friday night in Times Square, Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero combined to throw 490 punches over 12 rounds, now the fourth fewest, while Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez let 503 punches fly, at No.6.

Canelo landed a fight-high 10 punches in the twelfth round.

Otherwise, neither fighter landed more than 7 punches in any other round.

Canelo landed 56 of his punches (36.8%).

Scull found a home for 55 of his (18.8%).

They both averaged 5 punches landed per round.

40 of Canelo’s 48 power punch connects (83%) were body shots.

Canelo and Scull threw the least combined punches for a 12-round fight

The fight may not have performed, but it served an important purpose.

Not only did Canelo unify all four belts once again, but he also simultaneously landed a super fight with Terence Crawford in Las Vegas on September 12.

Both men faced off for the first time in the ring post-fight and gave their initial reactions to the much-anticipated encounter finally getting over the line.

“I’m feeling blessed,” said Crawford. “Everything happens for a reason, and there is a reason why I am here.

“In September, I’m going to show the world what greatness looks like.”

Asked why he believes he is the man to knock Canelo off of his 168lbs perch, Crawford responded: “Because I am the best.

“That is why everyone is going to come and watch on September 12.”

Canelo added: “I feel great. Crawford is one of the best out there.

“And I like to share the ring with that kind of fighter. It is my pleasure.”

Terence Crawford and Teofimo Lopez seemed to have buried their longstanding beef a few months back in Riyadh after “Bud” confronted “The Takeover” about bad-mouthing him in the media. In this video, Crawford pretty much big brothers Lopez, as Teo eventually admits he was just doing it for promotion. That prompted Crawford to say he no longer has to “f**k him up.”

But it seems not all is sunshine and rainbows between the two camps, as tensions boiled over backstage during the recent “Garcia vs. Romero” weigh ins between Crawford and an unidentified female member of the Lopez camp.

In the short clip embedded above, “Bud” can bee seen arguing with the woman as they get separated by security. Eventually, Crawford can be heard saying, “Shut up, before someone smacks the shit out of your dumb ass.” He then goes on to tell her, “Shut up, b*tch” (twice) before they go their separate ways.

JUST IN: Would be monumental: WBC wants Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford super fight

The full context of the argument is not known, as the video is a short clip and there are always two sides to the story. And it seems to be an all-family beef, as one of Crawford’s sisters chimed in on social media.

The feud between the two combatants began after Crawford took issue with Lopez declaring that “Bud” had a history of facing injured opponents, and then claiming that his resume is far superior than Crawford’s. Lopez drew the ire of Crawford once more after he made some racially insensitive comments aimed at himself and Gervonta Davis.

In October of 2024, Lopez was asked who he would prefer to face between “Tank” and Bud,” saying, “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana. They are gorillas. I’m a lion. I eat them.”

A fight between the two pugilists has never come to fruition, as Crawford now has his eyes set on a much bigger fish to fry in the form of Canelo Alvarez, a bout which is currently in talks to go down in Sept. 2025 inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. As for Lopez, he has his hands full against Arnold Barboza Jr. later tonight (Fri., May 2, 2025) in New York City.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has welcomed a ‘monumental’ super fight between pound-for-pound greats Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

Canelo is looking to become undisputed super-middleweight champion this weekend when he puts his WBA, WBC and WBO belts on the line against IBF champion William Scull in Saudi Arabia.

The Mexican has repeatedly been linked to an eventual showdown with two-weight undisputed champion Crawford, with it being reported in January that the pair had agreed to fight in September later this year.

“Yes, this is what boxing is all about. Remember, he has to fight Scull before Crawford,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports.

“You can never see in the future when you have one event, if he’s successful, the fight with Crawford would be monumental.

“It would be a huge fight between the classic combination, Mexico against the USA. He has provided some of the great fights in the past.

“Crawford is, without a doubt, one of the top fighters in the world right now. Canelo is. It would be a monumental, huge event, without a doubt.”

Crawford last fought in August 2024 when he defeated Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision to extend his perfect professional record to 41-0.

Canelo has meanwhile also emerged as a potential future opponent for Chris Eubank Jr, who is coming off his historic unanimous decision win over Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Turki Alalshikh exclusively told Sky Sports in February that Eubank would have the opportunity to face Canelo at the beginning of 2026 were he to beat Benn, against whom there is notably a rematch clause.

Eubank Jr’s promoter Ben Shalom reaffirmed that a shot at Canelo remains in the pipeline.

“Absolutely. That’s the plan. That was the fight that Chris dreams of,” Boxxer CEO Shalom told Sky Sports.

“He [Eubank] is going to be the biggest star in the UK and that will make for a huge, huge fight against Canelo. Both of them coming towards the latter stages of their career, which will make it interesting.

“What we’d love to do is be able to somehow get Canelo over to the UK. I think he’s always wanted to fight in the UK. But he needs the right dance partner, someone that can really sell an event and that’s Chris Eubank Jr.

“I think Canelo February next year, that’s what we want to see.

“There’s not many dance partners Canelo can choose that can bring something to the table. Chris Eubank Jr brings something to the table and really opens him up to another market. I think it can happen.”

Former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford may have won every fight in the ring thus far. However, there was a time early in his career when a life-threatening incident nearly derailed his journey—and robbed the boxing world of a future legend. For Crawford, the memory of that ordeal remains deeply personal and sensitive.

Yet, a recent exchange with a fan appears to have resurfaced those painful memories, opening old wounds in the process. Rolling back time to 2008, when Crawford was a mere prospect with a professional record of 4-0. Times were humbler back then, away from the glitz and glamor associated with being a two-weight undisputed champion.

Surrounded by a handful of friends, ‘Bud’ was shooting dice under the glow of streetlights. A few rounds in, he had made some money and was satisfied with his winnings. Deciding to call it a night, he headed back to his 1986 Pontiac Cutlass Supreme. Instead of driving off, he lingered in the car, counting his profits—a decision he would come to regret.

Suddenly, a loud bang shattered the quiet night. A nine-millimeter bullet pierced through the rear window of his car, striking Crawford just behind the ear. Blood began to pour from the wound, but Crawford managed to drive himself to the hospital. There, he endured an agonizing wait of over five hours before finally receiving stitches.

Harrowing as it is, Crawford had lived through it! However, after a clip of ‘Bud’ wrestling someone during the Steven Nelson vs Diego Pacecho event in Las Vegas surfaced on X, one fan reopened Crawford’s wounds. The user commented on the clip, “Every day I understand more & more why this n***a got shot in the head.”

The unnecessary reminder of his past surrounded by gangs and violence didn’t sit well with Crawford, who retorted, “Every day I understand that you n***as is internet thugs.” The user came back with a response, suggesting he meant it as a complement to highlight people “can’t fight you fair cuz you’re Super***a.”

However, Crawford didn’t see it that way, writing, “Idk how you see a person getting shot is giving a compliment yall my people gotta do better.” Regardless, today, Crawford has bigger things to worry about—his potential blockbuster fight against Canelo Alvarez.

‘Bo Mac’ on rehydration clause for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight

Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, has dismissed the need for a rehydration clause in the potential super middleweight clash against Canelo Alvarez. Despite the significant size disparity—Canelo being a natural 168-pounder and Crawford recently moving up to 154 pounds—BoMac is confident in his fighter’s skills.

“We don’t give a damn about that, you can only get so big,” McIntyre told Ring Magazine. “If you get too big, then that is on him. I love Terence’s chances.” Rehydration clauses often limit how much weight a fighter can regain after the weigh-in, but Crawford’s team isn’t interested in such restrictions.

“That’s some bulls****, that is some weak s****,” BoMac added. “You accepted the fight, let’s fight as men.” This decision underscores Crawford’s confidence, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown without excuses, as both fighters prepare to meet on even terms.

That said, the user on social media definitely was prying at a wound Terence Crawford didn’t want to think about anymore. The exchange between the two just goes to show there are always some lines fans should avoid crossing. What did you think about their exchange?

It was a dominant win for Alvarez, dropping Berlanga on his way to a one-sided unanimous decision victory, handing the Puerto Rican his first defeat in the process.

The next man standing opposite Canelo in the ring could well be Crawford, who has made it clear he would be willing to step up to 168lbs for the bout despite currently being two weight classes below his rival.

‘Bud’ was last in action in August when he defeated Israil Madrimov to win the WBA super-welterweight title in his 154lb debut, becoming a four-weight world champion in the process.

Berlanga has now given his take on the proposed Canelo vs. Crawford match-up whilst talking to Sway, and needed just three words to sum up his initial thoughts on the American’s chances.

“Anything can happen.”

He then explained exactly why he thinks ‘Bud’ has what it takes to get the win.

“Terence Crawford is great, he’s a great fighter. The only thing I see that I favour Canelo is his weight and that he’s bigger, that’s the only thing.

“As far as skillset wise, IQ, I feel like Crawford can match anybody and probably do way better. Crawford is a legend and like I said you can’t count him out.”

While Berlanga may see it as a 50-50 fight, two-weight world champion Tim Bradley sees it being a destructive victory for ‘Bud’ Crawford.

Oleksandr Usyk fell to defeat in the amateurs against former IBF and WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter.

Before Usyk established himself as the best heavyweight of his generation, the Ukrainian slickster started off as a middleweight in the unpaid ranks.

In 2006, he met Porter in a USA vs Ukraine amateur tournament that saw 11 fighters from both countries pitted against each other.

Despite being considerably shorter and smaller than Usyk, ‘Showtime’ was able to beat the future two-weight undisputed champion on points by a margin of 23-20.

Recalling his victory, back when both men were around 20 years old, Porter said on his podcast, The PorterWay: “I’m roughly 5ft 7ins now – I was pretty much that then – Usyk was not as tall as he is now but around 6ft [he was] slim at 165lbs, but he could box.

“Back in the day, we were on a point system where three out of five judges had hit a button at the same time in order to get points.

“In the amateurs a lot of punches landed, not many points were scored, it is just how it went.

“It was a close fight the whole way, it was like a 2 to 3-point spread the whole way.

“I don’t remember who was winning each round but I do remember this: going into the last round, my dad was coaching me, and we had this other guy Dan Campbell, he was the 2008 Olympic coach, he’s down on the floor putting the stool in, putting the bucket in, putting the water in.

“[He was] not saying too much but going into that fourth round before I walked out and the bell rang, he said ‘Hey, Shawn, if you line him up, he’s there for the right hand – if you throw a straight right, you’ll land it and get him’.

“And that’s exactly what happened in the fourth round. We were moving around, we were doing our thing and I landed a right hand on Usyk and he stumbled back.

“And [being] Shawn Porter, you already know I jumped on him and ended up winning 23-20.

“It was a great fight. That fight, I promise you for an amateur fight it is worth paying for. I remember it was a great competitive fight.”

Unfortunately, there is no footage of the fight at the time of writing, although Porter is hoping to get his hands on it.

In the years that followed their bout, Porter went on to win the 2007 National Golden Gloves and turned over as a professional a year later after missing out on a spot at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

As a pro, Porter became a two-time welterweight world champion before hanging up his gloves in 2021 following a tenth-round stoppage loss to Terence Crawford.

Usyk found more success in the amateurs, winning gold at the Worlds, Europeans and 2012 London Olympics.

In the paid ranks he continued to thrive as he became the undisputed cruiserweight champion by beating Murat Gassiev in the final of the 2018 World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament.

He then achieved the same feat at heavyweight by toppling Tyson Fury in May before defeating him for a second time earlier this month to close out their rivalry in style.

Terence Crawford is looking to move up two divisions to challenge Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.

Both future Hall of Famers, Crawford and Canelo are four-weight world champions each coming to the final chapter of their career. For Crawford, the final legacy-defining bout is against the Mexican, who currently holds three of the four major belts at 168 pounds.

Speaking to Sean Zittel, five-weight world champion Claressa Shields backed Crawford should it happen.

“I think the last few fights I’ve seen Canelo slow down a little bit … Team Crawford, me. It’s gonna be a good one, but Canelo, he’s number two pound-for-pound. Pound-for-pound number one is Crawford, and that’s skill wise.”

When told that Canelo had warned Crawford there are weight classes for a reason, Shields used her own recent winning experience at heavyweight having won titles as low as super-welterweight as a rebuttal.

“Oh that’s beautiful. I’m all the way a heavyweight. That’s because I got the skills, the power and everything to pay the bills. Terence Crawford’s got the skills to pay the bills, the knockout power. He’s very smart in there. And he’s sturdy. Now the weight class can matter a little bit, but boxing matters.”

It’s understood that Canelo will receive an offer now that neither man has a fight coming up. Whether or not he takes it remains to be seen, and he is demanding big money. Having just come off another title defence against Edgar Berlanga, he has shown interest in moving back up to light-heavyweight to rematch Dmitry Bivol.

There are some in the sport that believe Crawford may retire if he doesn’t land the fight, although the man himself recently hinted that he would continue on.

How much money would it take to dethrone the champions in every major division? DAZN Boxing gave their fans a sum of $18 million in a recent social media post to choose their team. So, who are these champions? Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, former super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, and former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford. But wait, there’s more.

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue, and women’s WBC super bantamweight champion Yamileth Mercado were also part of the lineup. This was enough to get fans excited as they picked from the options with price tags to defeat each champion in their division.

Who are the challengers?

In addition to the defending champions, DAZN Boxing gave their followers five challengers they could pick from each division with a diminishing price tag. The only catch was the total price tag of the six challengers they chose should not cross $18 million. For Usyk, the challengers were Tyson Fury ($5 million), Anthony Joshua ($4 million), Zhilei Zhang ($3 million), Martin Bakole ($2 million) and Moses Itauma ($1 million).

For Canelo, the list of challengers included Edgar Berlanga ($5 million), Osleys Iglesias ($4 million), Jamie Munguia ($3 million), Diago Pacheco ($2 million), and William Scull ($1 million). In a similar diminishing cost, for Terence Crawford, the challengers were Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr., Jermell Charlo, Sebastian Fundora, and Xander Zayas.

Gervonta Davis had Shakur Stevenson, Vasyl Lomachenko, William Zepeda, Abdullah Mason, and Mark Chamberlain. Meanwhile, Naoya Inoue had to face one of the following: Angelo Leo, Brandon Figueroa, Rafael Espinoza, Murodjon Akhmadaliev, and Bruce Carrington. And finally, Yamileth Mercado.

Gervonta Davis vs Vasyl Lomachenko

Her challengers were Erika Cruz Hernandez, Elleie Sctotney, Mea Motu, Phannarai Netisri, and Nazarena Romero. Seeing such a formidable list of challengers, fans quickly took their personalized list to the comments section to challenge the kings of the division.

Fan wonders if they should keep the money

There’s a reason each of those fighters is a champion—nobody can beat them. This led one user to come up with an alternative. The user wrote, “Can I keep the $18M instead? Half of them not losing.” However, Davis and Crawford are yet to face Stevenson and Ennis, so their crown isn’t exactly safe.

However, the next user was all in on the game, as he shared his list to beat the kings of the divisions. “Bakole, Pacheco, Ennis, Stevenson, Carrington,” the user wrote. This user seems to have forgotten about Mercado, and he is even left with $3 million.

The next user had some changes in his list. The user chose, “AJ, Pacheco, Boots, Loma, Shu Shu, Netisri.” Skipping Stevenson for Davis was interesting, but the lack of money may have influenced this user’s decision.

Terence Crawford Vs Jaron Ennis

Another user presented his list to fight the kings. The user commented, “Bakole, Pacheco, Ennis, Shakur, Bruce.” Even this user seems to have forgotten about Mercado, with several million left.

Meanwhile, this user was left bamboozled with the list of challengers provided for Canelo Alvarez. “That Canelo column is pure foolishness…. Im not playing this game …. Yall ruined it,” the user wrote. This could be because of the absence of David Benavidez.

While the list of fighters people chose to defeat the champions of each division is interesting, making those fights in real life can prove a bit difficult. But the post from DAZN Boxing gave a clear idea of what fights people would like to see. Regardless, who would you choose to beat the kings?
