ERNESTO MERCADO made some noise in more ways than one during his Matchroom debut in Las Vegas last night.

The 23-year-old super lightweight extended his unbeaten record to 17-0 (16 KOs) with a fourth-round stoppage victory over former two-weight world champion Jose Pedraza, 29-7-1 (14 KOs. Those brace of world titles, however, did come at super-featherweight and lightweight back in 2015 and 2018.

Nonetheless, Mercado knew he had to impress against the 35-year-old veteran and did so particularly at range. Pedraza may be nicknamed ‘Sniper’ but it was Mercado who picked off his target from distance targeting the body of his opponent throughout.

In his 37th contest Pedraza could do little but follow the unbeaten prospect around the ring. Mercado continued to look good, though, and in round three threw a wicked three-punch combination then forced Pedraza with another thudding shot downstairs to rubber stamp his superiority.

The Mercado jab was effective, too, but not utilised as often as it should have been but it mattered little because in round four ‘Tito’ picked off Pedraza with a counter-left which staggered Pedraza before a punch behind the ear sent the Puerto Rico down. Referee Robert Hoyle gave the count and Pedraza to his credit got back up but the unsteadiness of it was enough for Hoyle to wave the fight off.

“When I saw the perfect shot I took him out,” Mercado told DAZN’s Chris Mannix afterwards.

“He was scared. He was scared to get countered with a good shot like these other fighters that have got no power like Keyshawn [Davis], like Shakur [Stevenson].”

Stevenson and Davis both campaign one division below at lightweight but when asked what he wanted in 2025 Mercado made it clear by pointing to Stevenson, the current WBC 135lb champ, who was sat ringside.

“I want that punk right there sitting down in that blue sweatsuit,” Mercado said.

Stevenson responded immediately with his own verbal volleys but Mercado was the man on the mic.

“I’ll wide that gap between your teeth,” he said.

“Richardson Hitchins, who won the IBF [super lightweight title], I’m willing to whoop his ass first if this p***y ass is scared to fight me next.”

Prior to Mercado’s victory his Uncle Israel, 11-1-2 (7 KOs), earned an unexpected majority draw against the Robert Garcia-trained Leonardo Rubalcava, 9-0-1 (3 KOs). Described as an “audition” for Rubalcava by the DAZN commentary team promoter Eddie Hearn may have been unsure whether to offer a contract after a lacklustre display from the unbeaten super lightweight.

Mercado was on the floor in round one and later deducted a point in round seven for repeated low blows. But ‘Bad Ways’ Mercado did some good overall and proved to be a nightmare for Rubalcava with a relentless, awkward style that deserved more than the majority draw verdict after the eight-round televised opener.

Who is the future face of boxing? Canelo Alvarez holds the title after toiling hard for years to get to where he is. But who is after him? It seems ChatGPT has a curious and logical answer: Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson. But the fans are not liking it.

Davis, 30, is currently scheduled to fight and defend his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach. Stevenson, 27, is recovering from a hand injury and also booked to fight Floyd Schofield on February 22. The two can cement their position at the top of the lightweight division and lay claim to the ‘face of boxing’ crown.

ChatGPT pushes Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson

Boxing Media took to their Instagram handle and posted the question of who could be in line to replace Alvarez, 34, and reign over the boxing world in the coming years. The answer read, “In five years, the face of boxing will likely be Shakur Stevenson or Gervonta Davis, given their youth, talent, and marketability. However, a new star could emerge unexpectedly, as boxing often produced breakout sensations.”

Alot of high-profile boxers are currently in holding patterns when it comes to deciding what their next moves will be. Canelo Alvarez still doesn’t have an opponent for September. No one knows what Devin Haney might do after the Ryan Garcia debacle. And Gervonta Davis just saw a potential opponent, Vasiliy Lomachenko, fall through.

That last big name is of particular importance to Shakur Stevenson, who is coming off of a recent victory and needs a notable win to stave off the criticism. Fighting and beating Tank would certainly accomplish that, and it sounds like Stevenson is open and willing to making it happen.

Shakur Stevenson waiting for Tank Davis to make the call

Stevenson’s co-manager, Josh Dubin, spoke to BoxingScene on Tuesday and revealed that they’re just waiting on Davis to come through.

It’s all up to Tank. The one thing about Shakur: he will take anyone you put in front of him. We’re here and waiting and ready to negotiate. We’ll know how realistic [it] is by how financially viable they make it for Shakur… [We] have our phone lines open, ready for a call, and they have our numbers. It’s a fight Shakur really wants. He’s been begging for it for a long time.

RYAN GARCIA VS GERVONTA TANKS

It appears that Stevenson wants it badly, but it will come down to the numbers, as is usually the case when two elite boxers try to plan a fight. We’ll see if both sides can make sacrifices and come to a compromise some time within the next couple of months.

Gervonta Davis could be still be set to return this year despite no official announcement.

The WBA Lightweight World Champion defended his belt in June with an emphatic knockout of previously undefeated Frank Martin. He immediately entered talks with the IBF’s Vasiliy Lomachenko for a unification, but the Ukrainian pulled out.

JUST IN: Gervonta Davis’ trainer has no fear and challenges Floyd Mayweather to a fight against Tank…

Another two-belt clash with WBC’s Shakur Stevenson remains on ice, and ‘Tank’ Davis was reportedly targeting a rematch with Isaac Cruz after the Mexican became only one of two men to take him the distance back in 2021.

Those plans were scuppered by one Jose Valenzuela. ‘El Rayo’ beat Cruz for his WBA Super-Lightweight World Title in August. Naturally, many in the sport began to speculate that the winner was now in line for Davis, even despite his trainer Robert Garcia stating clearly that they wouldn’t fight again this year.

Speaking to ES News from the gym, Valenzuela shut down the speculation, saying that the contracted rematch with Cruz takes precedence.

“I don’t got a date yet but I’m just moving around … Yeah of course the fans [are asking me about the Tank fight] because they were excited about it cause that’s what they’re hearing … Nah [not in November], I got a rematch clause with Pitbull so we’re waiting for them and we’ll go from there.”

Those who still believe the fight – which would likely see Davis step up to 140 pounds for the second time in his campaign – is next will assume a step-aside deal is being worked out with Cruz.

Dan Rafael reports that ‘Tank’ could return on either November 23 or December 14, with ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez revealing that the event could be co-headlined by David Benavidez, a repeat of the Martin show in June where Benavidez made his light-heavyweight debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
