Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis

Browsing

Fort Stockton, Texas’ Abel Mendoza might not have faced the toughest opponents in his 9-year-long career, but he sure talks a big game. The undefeated 29-year-old has largely flown under the radar, fighting journeymen on club shows with sprinkles of debutants. However, his latest comments about Gervonta Davis have caught the eye of Curmel Moton—the protege of Floyd Mayweather.

Moton, one of the brightest prospects in boxing, has trained under the watchful eyes of former five-division champion Mayweather and is often referred to as the next big thing in the sport. The 18-year-old is coming off a one-sided win over Frank Zaldivar last weekend, stopping the Cuban with a 3rd round knockout.

Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gervonta Davis are friends again? They were together in Las Vegas | Marca

Regardless, the entire situation between Moton and Mendoza began when an X user posted a side-by-side graphic of the fighters, asking for a potential fight between them. Initially, Moton responded to the fight proposal on the social media platform by claiming he would beat Mendoza easily. “I’d do him so bad,” Moton wrote.

Following this, Mendoza appeared in an interview with Jay Fiore on YouTube, where he claimed, “I’ll tell you what. After I knock out ‘Tank,’ I’ll give you [Curmel Moton] a shot—once you become a contender.” It’s worth mentioning that there’s no evidence that Gervonta Davis has any intentions of fighting Mendoza.

Instead, Davis is slated to lock horns with WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1st in Brooklyn. Regardless, after discovering Mendoza’s comments about Gervonta Davis and him, Moton explained he is at a loss for words. “Both these 🥷🏽 so corny and delusional. I don’t even know how to respond to this shii,” Moton wrote on X.

Even though this surprising rivalry seems like it can turn into an intriguing fight between Mandoza and Moton, the 29-year-old Fort Stockton native seems to be threatening to overtake Floyd Mayweather’s achievement.

Floyd Mayweather: Gervonta Davis' coach challenges Floyd Mayweather to prove “greatness” by testing his shoulder roll technique against 'Tank'

Able Mendoza may overtake Floyd Mayweather

Abel Mendoza is inching closer to Floyd Mayweather’s legendary 50-0 record, sitting at 42-0. However, the undefeated lightweight has yet to face elite competition, with most of his wins coming against journeymen. Unlike Mayweather, who had won world titles in five divisions by this stage, Mendoza isn’t ranked by any major sanctioning body at 135 lbs.

Despite his unblemished record, Mendoza has drawn criticism from rising prospects like Curmel Moton and J’Hon Ingram, who dismissed his resume as weak. Previously, Moton even mocked Mendoza’s resume with three trash can emojis on social media.

Fast-rising prospect Keyshawn Davis is set to challenge Denys Berinchyk for the WBO lightweight title. However, ‘The Businessman’ seems to have his sights set beyond his upcoming opponent. The 25-year-old Norfolk native has recently called out Isaac Cruz for a future showdown while also taking a jab at Gervonta Davis.

The 12-O prospect will take on current undefeated WBO lightweight champion Berinchyk at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York on 14th February, a fight that will mark his first title fight. However, after Isaac Cruz secured a unanimous decision win over Angel Fierro on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. David Morrell yesterday, Davis jumped into action.

‘Pitbull’ Cruz was coming off a shocking upset loss to Jose Valenzuela last year, and the Fierro fight was meant for him to bounce back. He also seems to have rejected a fight offer from Ryan Garcia in May to focus on the bout. Regardless, following his win, ‘The Businessman’ wrote on X, “I’m not gonna lie after I get my belt I would love to fight Isaac Cruz. He a dawg & I’m a dawg would be a great fight.”

At the same time, Gervonta Davis was also watching the Benavidez vs. Morrell event in Las Vegas. In a tweet on X, ‘Tank’ wrote, “I hate when the ref say ‘stop holding’..b**ch I’m trying to get myself together, give me a sec..” This seems to have prompted the 25-year-old to hit back at the Baltimore native with a 5-word verbal attack.

“You a h*e shut up,” Keyshawn Davis wrote. Before wanting to fight Cruz, ‘The Businessman’ has called out Gervonta Davis to a fight on multiple occasions due to the paycheck Davis brings with him. However, the undefeated Baltimore native doesn’t seem to be interested in the Norfolk native’s challenge.

Interestingly enough, even Keyshawn Davis’ upcoming opponent prefers Gervonta Davis over him.

Denys Berinchyk isn’t looking past Keyshawn Davis, but he already has his eyes on a bigger prize. The newly crowned WBO champion is gearing up for his February 14 showdown against Davis, but if everything goes according to plan, he knows exactly who he wants next. “Gervonta Davis is better for me,” Berinchyk admitted during an interview with The Toma Todito Boxing Show.

The tale of Mexico vs. Cuba has always been an alluring narrative for fight fans, and David Benavidez vs. David Morrell didn’t disappoint. However, in the end, Benavidez was the one to get his hand raised by unanimous decision. But WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis wasted no time halting the celebrations, immediately accusing referee Thomas Taylor of cheating.

From the first bell, both fighters were determined to deliver what fans paid money to watch—an absolute slugfest. Both fighters exchanged blows as if a knockout finish was the only answer. By the fourth round, Morrell had Benavidez hurt and leaning back on the ropes with a surprise right hook. The once invincible Benavidez looked vulnerable for the first time in a long time.

However, Benavidez remained on the front foot, pressuring Morrell back and relying on counters rather than bringing the action. As a result, Benavidez kept breaking through Morrell’s guard to land brutal uppercuts. Still, Morrell’s resolve wasn’t about to waver even if he stayed on the back foot. Benavidez even took the break after the sixth round as an opportunity to remind viewers he is the ‘El Monstoro’.

Benavidez’s performance reflected that, as by the 8th round, Benavidez had landed a lot more punches. Slowly but surely, Benavidez’s power and pressure had started to show its effects on Morrell. By the ninth round, the Cuban was clearly fatigued, and both Benavidez and his corner were well aware of it. ‘The Mexican Monster’ was comfortably ahead on the unofficial scorecard. The only lingering question was: how much longer could Morrell hang on?

Davis-Benavidez Could Feature On A Dec 14 Card | Boxing News

As the fight went into the championship rounds, the once-Morrell showboating in the early rounds had to watch Benavidez take up that role. Morrell, with advice from his corner, tried to steal the last two rounds with aggression, but Benavidez invited the action. However, near the end of the 11th round, Morrell scored a surprise knockdown.

Still, the referee deducted a point from Morrell for punching after the bell, putting Benavidez back on top. The judges scored the fight 115-111 twice and 118-108, all for Benavidez. In the meantime, Davis hopped on X to take shots at the referee, writing, “The ref cheatinggg!!!!”

For the past few years, David Benavidez had one goal to fight super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez. However, with his latest win, it appears he has abandoned his dream for now, at least. After acquiring Morrell’s WBA (regular) WBA light heavyweight strap, and his WBC ‘Interim’ light heavyweight belt, he has confirmed his position as the WBC mandatory challenger to the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol.

Davis And Benavidez Could Fight On Same Card | Boxing News

The Ring Magazine provided the update on X, writing, “David Benavidez has now confirmed his position as the WBC mandatory challenger to fight the winner of the Feb 22nd Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol rematch for the undisputed light-heavyweight world titles.” The winner of the February 22nd rematch could be fighting again for the undisputed title later this year.

That said, even though Gervonta Davis isn’t exactly happy about referee Thomas Taylor deducting a point from Morrell, Benavidez has officially moved to a bigger challenge. What did you think of the fight? Who do you think Benavidez would end up fighting?

Former WBA super lightweight champion Isaac Cruz is set to step back into the ring on February 1st, facing fellow Mexican boxer Angel Fierro at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This matchup will feature prominently on the undercard of the highly anticipated clash between David Benavidez and David Morrell.

The Mexican boxer is eager to make a statement as he looks to rebound from a recent upset loss. Cruz’s return has sparked fan interest in his career and record. While speculation previously linked him to a potential bout with Ryan Garcia, reports confirm that Cruz is solely focused on his upcoming fight with Fierro. But the question is, who has he lost to?

Isaac Cruz’s boxing losses

The 26-year-old started his emphatic boxing career back in March 2015 and instantly found success. It was clear Cruz was different from his peers because of the skills he showcased early in his career. However, in the very next year of his debut, ‘Pitbull’ suffered his first career loss to fellow countryman Luis Montano Alvarez.

In that fight, all three judges scored in Alvarez’s favor, handing Cruz a unanimous decision loss. A rematch between them never materialized. Determined to recover, Cruz secured a victory against then-newcomer Italo Ortiz shortly after. He maintained his momentum for several fights until a split-decision draw against Jose Calyecac Capilla in 2017 briefly halted his streak.

As before, Cruz rebounded with a string of impressive wins, steadily climbing the ranks. His big break came in 2021 when he stepped in on short notice to face Gervonta Davis after Rolando Romero withdrew. Cruz gave Davis one of the toughest challenges of his career, but Davis ultimately secured a unanimous decision victory.

Unfazed, Cruz bounced back once again, racking up wins and capturing the WBA super lightweight title in 2024 with a victory over Romero. However, his reign was short-lived, as he suffered an upset loss to Jose Valenzuela later that year. Now, Cruz is plotting his comeback, preparing to face Angel Fierro, a relatively lesser-known opponent, in hopes of reigniting his career.

Isaac Cruz’s stats and record

Despite facing several setbacks throughout his career, Isaac Cruz boasts an impressive professional record of 26-3-1. Known for his fearless approach, the 26-year-old has consistently taken on challenging opponents, even when it placed him at a disadvantage. In his upcoming bout, Cruz enters as a heavy betting favorite, with many expecting him to secure a decisive victory.

Cruz’s stats highlight his power and efficiency in the ring. Of his 26 wins, 18 have come via knockout, giving him a solid knockout rate of 69.23%. Standing at 5′ 4″ (163 cm) with a reach of 63″ (160 cm), Cruz may be shorter than many of his opponents, but his compact frame and relentless fighting style make him a formidable adversary.

That said, Isaac Cruz may have suffered some setbacks along the path, but he has in no way given up on his goal of rising to the top. What did you think of all of Cruz’s losses? Do you think he can return to the top?

Gervonta Davis addresses comparisons to Mike Tyson with a bold statement, sparking discussions in the boxing world.

Mike Tyson Says 'Trouble With The Law' Is Only Similarity To Gervonta DavisGervonta “Tank” Davis is regarded as one of the most destructive fighters of his generation, carrying a legacy that often draws comparisons to the legendary Mike Tyson. With an undefeated record of 30-0, including 28 knockout victories, Davis has consistently demonstrated a level of power that leaves opponents sprawled on the canvas.

Davis’ fighting style—marked by calculated patience followed by explosive finishes—evokes memories of Mike Tyson in his “Kid Dynamite” days, when he dominated the heavyweight division with an astonishing streak of 19 consecutive knockouts.

While the comparisons between Davis and Tyson are inevitable, the former heavyweight champion himself has acknowledged the differences. When asked about his similarities with “Tank,” Tyson candidly replied, according to secondsout.com“I don’t know. Maybe just getting in trouble with the law. Other than that, no.”

In response, Davis took to social media with a concise and confident reply: “I agree. I have more skills.” This statement encapsulates Davis’ self-assuredness both in and out of the ring. Despite his respect for Tyson, Davis doesn’t hesitate to assert his own unique abilities and talent.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

Davis is currently gearing up to defend his WBA lightweight world title against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1. At a pre-fight press conference, he stunned the boxing world by announcing his intention to retire at the end of 2025.

In his prime, Mike Tyson was an unstoppable force in the heavyweight division. His combination of aggression, speed, and knockout power made him a global sensation. However, his career was also marked by personal challenges and periods of indiscipline.

Gervonta Davis, on the other hand, has displayed a similar destructive power, albeit in lighter weight classes. His patient yet explosive style has left an undeniable mark on modern boxing. However, like Tyson, Davis has faced his own controversies outside the ring, adding complexity to his story.

The Future of “Tank”

Davis’ announcement of his impending retirement at the end of 2025 has sparked speculation among fans. Will this truly mark the end of the “Tank” era, or is there more to come? Regardless of what lies ahead, Gervonta Davis has already solidified his place in the annals of modern boxing history.

Gervonta Davis shocked boxing fans when he announced that he will be hanging up the gloves at the end of 2025.

The knockout artist from Baltimore is 30-0 in his campaign with 28 stoppages. He has the potential, with a little more activity, to be one of it not the biggest star in the sport. That now looks unlikely given his out-of-the-blue retirement call.

Speaking to Moment Of Spotlight, an introspective ‘Tank’ Davis said his decision was somewhat based on the outside influences of the sport.

Gervonta Davis Drops Bombshell On 'Stepping Away From Boxing' For One Reason: "Never See Me Again" - Seconds Out

“I’m going through a lot, been through a lot, been betrayed and s**t like that. It really made me want to give up on the limelight. Everybody chase being in front of the camera. They chase an image. I don’t want to be a part of that. As long as I have my money, can take care of my kids and whoever I need to take care of, I don’t need none of this … You’re always being judged. You always got to live for someone else. You gotta be perfect, and nobody’s perfect.”

Davis then admitted that the animosity he feels towards opponents – perhaps a necessity to produce the sort of stunning knockouts he does – is something he would like to move away from.

“I’m the type of person if you go against me as a boxer, I don’t like you as a person. S**t like that I need to step away from, cause I don’t want to be like that. I feel as though I’m in it and if somebody is betting against me I feel like they want to stop my whole motion that I have going on. I don’t want to be like that. That’s why I’d rather step back on it and be on the cool side.”

Finally, 30-year-old Davis said that once of probation people may ‘never see him again.’

“At the end of 2025 I feel as though I should be more mature mentally, further than I am now. And I should be off of probation so I can travel the whole world. Once I can travel the whole world, people probably won’t ever see me again. I probably won’t be in America again.”

‘Tank’s final year in the sport begins with a title defence against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1 in Brooklyn, New York.

If one goes by what Gervonta Davis said, then the chances of watching the lightweight champion return on March 1 appear slim. Just a few days ago, he posted a cryptic message suggesting that the much-anticipated fight against Lamont Roach Jr. has been cancelled. But if one follows Lamont Roach Jr., then the showdown at the Barclays Center in New York still holds out.

It has become a very confusing situation. Add to that Davis’ earlier statements about hanging the gloves before 2026. Altogether it seems to have exacerbated the dilemma related to the Baltimorean’s career and, more significantly, his legacy. While Davis is renowned for his technical prowess and remarkable power—boasting a knockout rate exceeding 90%—fans and analysts alike are increasingly critical of his career trajectory. ShowBizz The Adult weighed in on the matter and shared his insights.

ShowBizz The Adult on Gervonta Davis’ Potential

That’s the thing about Tank that bothers me: it’s like what I said when I said what I want to see out of Shakur is what I want to see out of Tank,” said the popular content creator. He praised ‘Tank’ as an extraordinary fighter with incredible skills. Perhaps even one of the best ever seen. His approach to fights is unique and highly impressive, which sets him apart from most fighters.

However, “Tank bothers me because I see he approaches the fight—yo, I haven’t seen too many fighters ever approach a fight the way Tank approaches a fight,” said ShowBizz The Adult. The issue, according to him, however, lies in Davis’ career decisions. It could be avoiding the top opponents, lacking activity in the ring, or failing to strategically plan his legacy.

Given that he mentioned Shakur Stevenson, it is clear ShowBizz The Adult holds both fighters to a high standard. He wants to see the same qualities—perhaps hunger, ambition, or a desire to take on big challenges—from ‘Tank’ that he expects from Shakur.

This isn’t the first time ShowBizz The Adult has voiced concerns about Davis. He has previously drawn comparisons to boxing legends Roberto Durán and Manny Pacquiao, wishing Davis shared their mindset and drive.

The Mindset for Greatness

Duran and Pacquiao never restricted themselves to a particular division. The content creator wanted Gervonta Davis to follow in their footsteps. Davis should dream of becoming a welterweight champion rather than hanging about the lightweight division and ending his career there. For the context, ‘Tank’ won his first world title as a super featherweight and, venturing into the 135-pound division, stormed up to the light welterweight to face Mario Barrios in 2021, only to return back to the lightweight to defend his title.

ShowBizz The Adult argued that Pacquiao lacked Gervonta Davis’s power and craftiness. But on the other hand, the Baltimorean lacked the Filipino legend’s mindset for greatness. “I wish he had that mindset to say, I am going to conquer 147; I am going to conquer 140; Teofimo Lopez, you’re next. If he had that mindset, we’re talking about an all-time great fighter. I think abilities are all time, but I’m saying greatness; he just had that mindset,” he concluded.

With his upcoming fight shrouded in uncertainty, questions about Davis’ career choices and legacy are bound to grow louder. Fans can’t help but wonder: will Gervonta Davis seize the opportunities needed to cement his place among boxing’s greatest?

What do you think? Is Gervonta Davis on track to achieve greatness, or is he falling short of his potential?

The undefeated champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis is returning to the ring in one of the most anticipated matchups of the year. On March 1, 2025, Davis will defend his WBA lightweight world title against challenger Lamont Roach Jr. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight promises a spectacle full of action, strategy, and the signature knockout power that has made “Tank” a boxing superstar.

Gervonta Davis comes in with an impeccable record of 30 wins, 28 by knockout, showcasing his explosiveness and ability to end any fight with a single punch. In his recent outings, he left an indelible mark by defeating Ryan Garcia with an impressive KO in the seventh round, and Frank Martin, solidifying himself as one of the most dominant champions today. His speed, solid defense, and experience in high-caliber fights position him as the favorite for this duel, although the pressure to maintain his undefeated status always adds extra weight in these scenarios.

BALTIMORE – Baltimore boxer Gervonta Davis plans to hang up his gloves at the end of next year and seek therapy, according to our media partner at The Baltimore Banner.

Davis spoke about his impending retirement at a press conference on Tuesday to promote his WBA lightweight championship bout against Lamont Roach in March.

“After next year, I’m out of it,” Davis said. “Yeah, out of this sport.”

Davis elaborated to Yahoo! Sports on why he planned to retire.

“This #$%@ is trash, garbage,” Davis said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “Fed up. I’m fed up with the whole #$%#. … I just want to be able to make money and stay out the way, that’s it. I want to be living without being seen.”

“That’s why I don’t want to box no more,” Davis said. “I want to do therapy, right? But I feel as though, if I do therapy, it would lose the fire that I have inside of me. I want everything out of me where so I don’t never think about fighting again, I don’t think about even getting angry. Because I have two girls, two daughters. I want to be much softer, be more humble and things like that.”

Davis grew up in Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood.

“Tank” Davis to defend title against Lamont Roach

Davis, the WBA lightweight champion will face super featherweight champion Lamont Roach on March 1 at Barclays Center, where he won his first belt.

Davis predicted Tuesday he will knock out his former amateur rival from the Baltimore-Washington area.

“I like to show people that they aren’t who they say they are,” Davis said. “I like to prove it to the people they come with. My first time winning the title, the whole building doubted me.”

Gervonta Davis' Next Fight Confirmed, And Fans Aren't ImpressedDavis (30-0, 28 KOs) will be fighting for the first time since knocking out Frank Martin in June. He has stopped his last four opponents, a streak that began with his sixth-round KO of Rolando Romero on May 28, 2022, his last fight in Brooklyn.

He won his first title at 130 pounds with his victory over Jose Pedraza in 2017. Davis went on to win titles at 135 and 140 pounds.

Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) began his pro career at lightweight before moving down to 130 pounds to win a belt. He now moves back up in hopes of adding another.

“This is a hell of an opportunity and we’re gonna conquer it,” he said. “Everyone knows what I’m coming to do. And if you don’t, you’ll be surprised. I’m gonna show you what happens when two dogs go in the ring together.”

Calvin Ford and Gervonta “Tank” Davis‘ journey to the top was marked by deep losses, especially the tragic death of Quaadir Gurley, a close family friend and a key influence in Davis’s life. For Davis, Gurley was the reason Davis stepped into the ring in the first place.

Gurley was a father of six, a promising boxer and a mentor who first brought Davis to the gym, sparking a lifelong commitment to the sport. His story came to a tragic end in 2013 when he was shot and killed in New Jersey at just 24.

His loss sent shockwaves through the community, particularly affecting Ford and Davis, who would later dedicate fights to his memory.

Although Gurley was not Davis‘ formal coach, his influence was profound. It was Gurley’s introduction to boxing that set Davis on the path to becoming one of the sport’s brightest stars.

Davis often credits Gurley for the early inspiration that helped him rise above the struggles of their shared Baltimore upbringing and achieve greatness in the ring. Gurley’s legacy, though cut short, continues to inspire Davis and serves as a testament to the power of mentorship.

Angelo Ward, Ronald Gibbs, and Coach Calvin’s son-they’re guys who died and were such a major influence on my life.” Davis said, “Actually, many young men I used to look up to are either dead or in jail. Whenever I fight, I feel like their legacy is going into the ring with me. It’s a big responsibility, but I’ll take that.”

Who killed Quaadir Gurley?

The circumstances of Gurley’s death were particularly tragic. He was killed by Isiah Greene, who was 24 at the time and had a troubling history with the law.

Only a few days after the shooting, Greene was arrested by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and charged with murder and multiple weapons offenses. His bail was set at $500,000 and the legal proceedings would stretch out over years.

Greene faced three trials before any resolution was reached. He was eventually convicted of illegal firearm possession in the third trial, but the jury couldn’t agree on more serious charges, including first-degree murder.

Ultimately, Greene entered a plea deal in February 2015, pleading guilty to second-degree reckless manslaughter. He received a six-year prison sentence, running concurrently with other sentences related to weapons offenses and a separate assault case.
