GERVONTA DAVIS TANKS

Browsing

Boxers often use the word retirement with a double meaning, at least in recent times, in which an eventual exit from the ring can create or help to fuel certain narratives focused on generating expectation around specific fights or strategies to remain in the media spotlight.

A strategy even Mayweather used

In the case of Gervonta Davis, many people think that talking about retirement at 30 years of age and with so much future ahead of him is not only premature, but an absolute nonsense, especially as several fighters are in line to fight him, including Shakur Stevenson, who showed his anger at the news that Tank plans to hang up his gloves when he finishes in 2025. He told FightHubTV: “If he wants to retire with the career he has, go ahead and do what you have to do. I don’t agree with that. I think that’s soft!

What is a fact is that Gervonta Davis’ words have focused the eyes and the conversation on the 140-pound division, in which all the fighters who are waiting for a chance with Tank have not remained oblivious to the bickering.

Lopez acknowledged to FightHubTV that even Floyd Mayweather used the same strategy in his time in order to fuel media interest in his fights, something that Gervonta seems to have learned well, who remains unbeaten and with a great punch with his 28 knockouts in 30 victories.

Gervonta Davis has named who he believes to be the three best boxers to ever lace up a pair of gloves.

Davis is currently carving his own legacy, having put together an undefeated record of 30-0, with 28 of those victories coming by knockout.

He is the current WBA lightweight champion, with his next defence coming in March against Lamont Roach, and ‘Tank’ has also held world honours at super-featherweight and super-lightweight.

When it came to naming who he saw as the greatest of all time, Davis had three fighters in mind whilst speaking to PBC.

Gervonta Davis Officially Receives New Date For His Next Fight“Floyd Mayweather. Sugar Ray Leonard. Pernell Whitaker.”

Davis worked with Floyd Mayweather during the early stages of his career, so it isn’t a surprise to see him praising the boxing legend, even though there relationship has been strained as of late.

Mayweather retired with a perfect record of 50-0, winning world titles in five weight classes from super-featherweight to super-welterweight, beating the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez along the way.

Sugar Ray Leonard was another that excelled in multiple divisions, becoming a five-weight world champion, and undisputed at welterweight.

Terence Crawford and Gervonta Davis are currently three divisions apart but have competed in the same classes in the past.

Crawford kicked off his campaign at lightweight, where ‘Tank’ Davis is currently a world champion. He became undisputed at super-lightweight, where ‘Tank’ Davis has also won a belt.

Crawford has since continued to move up, clearing out the welterweight division before making his debut at 154 pounds last year. Davis remains back down at 135, holding the WBA World Title and knocking out all comers.

Gervonta Davis' Power Compared To Terence Crawford's By Sparring Partner: "He Kills You"The big hitter from Baltimore has said he would knock Crawford out in the past, perhaps tongue in cheek, but the bigger man has warned him not to punch above his weight. Whilst a fight is highly unlikely to ever take place, some believe it wouldn’t be a foregone conclusion.

In an interview with Real Lyfe Productions, multi-division world champion Roy Jones Jr said, “that’s a good damn fight,” clearly believing it would be competitive if the pair met just underneath the welterweight limit and giving ‘Tank’ a good chance due to one reason.

“I don’t see nobody around that’s gonna beat Bud unless it’s somebody way bigger than him, but don’t sleep on the fact that if him and Tank fought at about 145, that’s a good damn fight, you understand me?

He got no chance: Gervonta Davis claims to beat Terence Crawford in six roundsCause they both have very high IQs and Tank is very explosive. That’s the one thing that Tank got that Errol [Spence] didn’t have. In boxing, an explosive fighter can go a lot of places. I was only able to cover the weights that I covered because I was so explosive. Explosiveness keeps people in check.”

The two Americans will continue their campaign separately, with Crawford chasing a fight against super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez that would require a 14 pound jump, and ‘Tank’ out in March against Lamont Roach Jr before, according to his latest press conference, retiring at the end of the year.

After more than a year away from the ring, Gervonta Davis is back! “Tank” defends the WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on March 1, 2025 in Brooklyn.

Davis (30-0) has held gold at super flyweight, lightweight, and super lightweight. The 2012 Golden Gloves champion won the WBA (Regular) lightweight title against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2019 and has successfully defended it four times. In a fight to determine “the face of boxing,” Davis beat Ryan Garcia via knockout in April 2023. He fought a year later, knocking out Frank Martin in June.

The 30-year-old knows Roach well, as the two were frequent sparring partners over the years. Davis also went 2-0 against Roach at the amateur level. He looks to expose his opponent, this time as a pro, on fight night.

“I haven’t been watching his fights too much, but I’ve been in the gym with him, and I know how he moves,” Davis said. “I’ll get in camp and get up to date on him. I know for sure he’s definitely tough and has sneaky power. He’s had sneaky power since we were kids. We’re gonna figure out what he’s best at, and we’ll take it away from him.”

Roach (25-1-1) failed to capture the WBO super featherweight title against Jamel Herring in 2019. Since then, the 2013 Golden Gloves winner beat Hector Luis Garcia for the WBA super featherweight title.

Gervonta Davis Wants to Be Known for More Than His Knockouts - The New York TimesHe competes outside his weight class, but that doesn’t bother the cool, calm, and collected 29-year-old.

“I’ve gotten better in every aspect since the amateurs,” Roach said. “I was one of the best boxers in the country as an amateur, and I’m much better now… I can do whatever I want. He’s not doing anything to me. He’s got nothing for me. It’s just me and him. He can’t be worried about these other people.”

Santos said that fighting Davis would be a transformative opportunity for Valenzuela, and he called on him to take the biggest step in his career to face the lightweight titleholder. He also said that both Davis and Valenzuela must decide which weight is best for them to fight at.

“He was beaten by De Los Santos, he was in a close fight the first time with Chris Colbert,” he said. “There is no guarantee that in his next fight, whoever he faces at 140, he’s gonna beat him.

“Styles make fights, and if you have the opportunity to fight Gervonta Davis, one of the biggest names in boxing, to me you better take it because it may never come again. You know what I mean because look at what we’re trying to do here.

“You’re not protecting the undefeated record. You’ve already lost twice and there’s no guarantee that he’s going out there and will beat the next guy who may be the third ranked guy in the world or the fourth great guy in the world.”

The defeat by Valenzuela put a hold on a proposed Cruz-Davis rematch. Cruz is yet to know what’s next for him, but Santos thinks a move down to 135 pounds could be the best option for the hard-hitting fighter. He added that Cruz must adjust his style to be able to beat Valenzuela in a rematch.

Jose Valenzuela VS Los Santos

“I’m not in his camp but maybe he’ll be better off to go back down to 135,” he said. “I don’t know. Maybe he just has a lot of problems with southpaws – you know a long southpaw. That’s for him and his team to assess. But I’m a big fan of ‘Pitbull.’ I love his style and I love what he brings to the sport, because one thing about Pitbull, he always comes to fight.

“He’s gonna have to make some adjustments if there’s going to be a rematch, and I’m sure his team knows this. You know, I think he could straighten out his punches a little more. You must get a better balance and things of that nature.

“If he goes into a rematch with the same strategy, then it’ll be difficult for him. Because his only savior could be a miracle punch to end the fight, but Valenzuela will be prepared for that.”
