Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has opened up on the possibility of a fight against Tyson Fury, provided the Gypsy King doesn’t retire after his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk
Eddie Hearn has told Tyson Fury that the much-anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua could be arranged “immediately”.
Both British heavyweights are rebounding from title fight losses, with Joshua suffering a knockout by Daniel Dubois at Wembley and Fury losing to Oleksandr Usyk again just before Christmas. Despite both fighters arguably being beyond their peak years and no titles at stake, a bout between Joshua and Fury remains a tantalising and lucrative event.
Joshua is keen on the match-up, while Fury’s next move remains uncertain following his recent defeat. Assuming Fury, 36, opts to continue fighting, Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, has indicated that negotiations could commence without delay, hinting at Saudi Arabia as a probable venue.
“It’s the fight that everyone wants. Tell me a bigger fight? There isn’t one,” Hearn told The Stomping Ground on YouTube. “I don’t know if it’s going to happen.
“There have been no discussions. Fury’s coming off that defeat and after his break, he’s going to decide what he wants to do. If he wants to fight AJ, the fight happens immediately. We’ll see.”
Hearn added that now is not the time to pressure Fury’s team, saying: “I don’t think it’s the time to start prodding Tyson Fury. Don’t forget, he lost on December 21, so give him a few weeks to chill out.
“Sooner or later, in the coming weeks, we will want to put a plan together for Anthony Joshua. That is when the conversations will come with Frank Warren, Spencer Brown [Fury’s manager] and His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh] and say, ‘we want to make AJ-Fury what do you think? We’ll go from there.”
